Cambodia Gambling Halls

There is an interesting background to the Cambodia gambling halls that reside just over the border from next door Thailand, where gambling hall wagering is not legal. Eight gambling halls are established in a relatively tiny area in the city of Poipet in Cambodia. This band of Cambodia gambling dens is in an excellent area, a three to 4 hour trip from Bangkok and Macao, the two most popular wagering centers in Asia. Cambodia gambling dens do a thriving business with Thai blue-collar workers and guests from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very couple of Westerners. The phenomenal income accrued from the gambling dens ranges from $7.5 million to over 12.5 million dollars, and there are a couple of controls constraints for casino ownership. Ownership is required to be mainly Thai; although, funding sources are vague. The borders are ceremoniously open from 0900 to 17:00, and although visas are apparently required to cross, there are methods and means around this, as is true of most border crossings.

The initial Cambodia casinos opened in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were forced to close in 1998, leaving only a single casino in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a docked barge gambling den, features 150 one armed bandits and 60 tables. The Naga casino is open all day and night with forty two tables of mini-baccarat, four tables of 21, ten of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and one each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.

The 1st casino in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in 1999 and the Golden Crown before long opened. There are 150 one armed bandits and five tables at the Golden Crown and 104 slot machine games and sixty eight table games at the Holiday Palace. The latest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort contains three hundred slots and 70 tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slot machines and ninety six gaming tables, including 87 punto banco (the most dominant game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Additionally, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 slot machine games and 66 of the familiar table games, as well as 1 table of Casino Stud Poker. One more of the eight casinos in Poipet, again a part of a motel, is the Princess Casino with one hundred and sixty six slots and ninety seven casino games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of an international vacation and hotel complex that features many amenities on top of the casino, which has 10,000 sq.ft. of 130 slots and 88 gaming tables.
