There is a fascinating story to the Cambodia casinos that sit just over the border from next door Thailand, in which gambling hall gaming is not permitted. Eight gambling halls are anchored in a relatively small space in the municipality of Poipet in Cambodia. This band of Cambodia casinos is in a prime area, a three to four hour trip from Bangkok and Macao, the two most popular wagering locations in Asia. Cambodia gambling halls do a thriving business with Thai blue-collar workers and visitors from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a couple of Westerners. The amazing capital gained from the gambling halls ranges from $7.5 million to over 12.5 million dollars, and there are a few limitations requirements for casino ownership. Ownership is presumed to be mostly Thai; however, funding sources are cryptic. The borders are officially open from 09:00 to 17:00, and even though visas are supposedly needed to pass, there are methods around this, as is true of most borders.
The first Cambodia gambling halls opened in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were forced to close in 1998, leaving just a single gambling den in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a docked bateau gambling hall, highlights 150 slots and 60 table games. The Naga gambling hall never closes with 42 tables of mini-baccarat banque, 4 tables of vingt-et-un, ten of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and one each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The 1st gambling den in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in 1999 and the Golden Crown before long opened. There are 150 one armed bandits and five table games at the Golden Crown and 104 slot machine games and 68 gaming tables at the Holiday Palace. The newest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort contains three hundred one armed bandits and seventy tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slot machines and 96 table games, including 87 baccarat banque (the most beloved game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Additionally, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 one armed bandits and sixty six of the common table games, as well as one table of Casino Stud Poker. Another one of the 8 gambling halls in Poipet, also in a motel, is the Princess Casino with 166 one armed bandits and ninety seven table games. The Star Vegas Casino is is located in an international resort and hotel complex that contains a number of luxuries aside from the gambling den, which offers ten thousand square feet of one hundred and thirty slot machines and eighty eight gaming tables.
